In Light Up the Town, you play as Bean, a young ferret determined to help decorate her town in time for the winter festival. The game takes place in fictional Bellflower, Colorado—a charming and heavily wooded town complete with a movie theater, holiday market, and picturesque railroad system.

Meadow Studios invited me to create the game’s map, which acts as the primary method for players to traverse from level to level. Throughout the story, players unlock new locations on their map where they can decorate to their hearts’ content.

Sketches & Process

When I began designing the map, Light Up the Town creators Peter and Riley already had a strong sense of where each location should be relative to each other and where geographical features like mountains and rivers could go. My first challenge, then, was to find a way to connect the areas in a way that felt organic and easy to follow.

After sketching out the rough layout, I moved onto designing each location’s vignette. My goal was to strike the right balance of detail and legibility to make it fun and easy for players to navigate the map. Once all the main details were in place, I filled it with hundreds of snow-capped trees and added some finishing touches to bring it all to life.
