Sculpture Milwaukee is a free, outdoor art experience in
downtown Milwaukee. Every year, they bring world-class
sculptures to the public in their annual exhibitions, but 2020
was different. Amid gallery and museum closures during the
COVID-19 pandemic, Sculpture Milwaukee needed to let
people know that the show was still on. They reached out to
MIAD for a student poster competition to decide the look of
the 2020 exhibition.
This proposal won the competition, and Sculpture Milwaukee brought me on to design their campaign materials, including an exhibition map, brochure, print advertisement, and social distincting markers.
Inspired by the use of physical space in the exhibition’s artworks, the campaign’s graphics use a playful isometric style to capture the essence of 3D forms with the constraints of a 2D format. Stylized interpretations of sculptures from the exhibition are also featured as elements of the Milwaukee skyline.
